The what the hell??, or dumb ass landlords rant

Have you ever lived in a rental that was run by an asshole? Well, let see, how do i start. I live in a 4-plex that was built in 1935. It has charm, it has hardwood floors, it has ornate hardware on the doors. It also has very little insulation, mold, is drafty, dusty, right next to a bar and looks like it is going to fall into the parking lot. I am not kidding here. I spilled water on one of my carpets and it started running downhill!
Now I am not really complaining about all that. I like the place (kinda). They let me have my dog, rent is relatively cheap and I am close to school. What really pisses me off is that the manager treats me like shit when I call about something needing to be repaired. I know the landlord tennant law and I know how much time they have to fix what. Case in point, the front door is basicly a few strips of wood and 5 glass window paines. Last weekend Tom slammed the door alittle hard and one of them broke.. after this happened I check the other 4 and noticed that the 2 that are plexi-glass(making one realize something like this has happened before) were a bit wobbly in their frames but the glass ones were VERY loose. Since it was on a weekend I had no way of contacting the manager or the owner (even though by law they are required to have an emergency number). So I had Tom tape what was left up and put up some cardboard. I called on Tuesday, they said someone would be out. Needless to say I called 4 more times, and had to go down to the office twice and the second time threaten to not pay rent (which is within my rights) untill it was fixed. It took them a grand total of 6 days! Legally it was to be fixed within 24 hours of my notifying them. I was treated as if it was my responsability (it is not) and treated like shit. Sometimes I really wish I could just own my own home!! Grrrrr.
The sad part is, I may be one of the best tenants they've ever had. i do yard work for free, and regularly make small repairs on my own time and with my own money. and above all I often volunteer to do work around the building to improve it and make it safer. What a crock of shit.
